CARMARTHEN (12 miles)
Built in the early 12th century as a Motte and Bailey castle after the first castle, started in the late 11th century and situated down river, was destroyed. It is currently undergoing excavation work at the main gatehouse but most parts are available to see. |

CARREG CENNEN (10 miles)
The dramatic ruins of this castle (circa 1300) stand on the edge of a 100 metre / 325 feet cliff in the Western corner of the Brecon Beacons overlooking the Black Mountains. A system of caves are situated below the castle.

DINEFWR (10 miles)
Built towards the end of the 12th century, Dinefwr Castle overlooks the river Tywi approximately one mile from Llandeilo, high up on a hill. |

DRYSLWYN (7 miles)
Possibly the sister castle to Dinefwr, its construction date is unknown but was probably around the same as Dinefwr. It sits at the top of a hill overlooking the Tywi Valley. | |

Kidwelly Castle dates back to the 12th century and stands at the mouth of the Gwendraeth River. It is a substantial and well preserved ruin originally of Norman construction. |

Laugharne Castle is situated in the seaside town made famous by Dylan Thomas. Although medieval in origin it was later turned into a fine Elizabethan Mansion. | |

LLANSTEFFAN (19 miles)
Llansteffan Castle stands in an area occupied since prehistoric times. The earliest refernce to it is in 1146 AD when it was just a timber and earth structure. It stands on a bluff overlooking the Tywi Estuary.
